What makes zero sense to me is why they would honor any system of rules, even their own? Why would the world's elite allow us to attain freedom purely because of some sort of post office technicality and control over a flag?

If they have the means to take us by force why would that stop them? If they don't have the means to take us by force, why would we care whether we are recognized by their system?
