According to Wikipedia (so take with a grain of salt) it was a movement that started in the 1970's, but it regained popularity in 2014-2015 because of a prank on 4chan. I'd post the link, but they had a picture on the article, so I figured I'd save your eyes and you can go look it up if you want hahaha
