Zig-zagging would be appropriate for countermeasures against torpedo attack. It doesn't particularly help you find a submarine. It just creates a lot of self-generated acoustic noise when you want to be listening for something.

I really have no idea, maybe they picked up something that might have been a foreign sub and started counter measures to break up a soft target. idk.
