It might be because the upload server doesn't have the code to read the image metadata for orientation, but your device does. In the hard image data, the photo is landscape.
In other words your device would "hang it up" as portrait, but when comes time to send it over it sends it as landscape, with a note to the server saying "please hang it upright", but the server can't read the note because your device used a new language or something.
The same thing happens sometimes when for example you view portrait photos in Windows 7.
