Don't believe everything you read. Arguably, the U.S. needed more credit at the time to finance the cost of Vietnam and adhering to the gold standard limited our ability to pay our debts. Establishing a relationship with China enabled us to escape a direct nuclear confrontation and opened a huge new market. There are two sides to most stories.
