Because for centuries (since the Mongolian invasion) the Ottoman Empire held Crimea and used it as base for raids into Russian stepps to rape, pillage and ENSLAVE. The only solution was to take it from the Turks. Turkey is still butt hurt over this and is still supporting tatars (mongols) and their claims to the land.
Hussein, in the Fall of 2014, listed a couple of RFPs on State Dept. site, not sure if they are still listed there these days, but both were online back then. Asking for proposals to staff and manage military ports in Crimea as well as build US run SCHOOLS for US military kids. That was a clear cue for Russia to take Crimea back. Crimea was Russian, taken by Russia, and in Russian hands until Khruschiov in 1958 "gifted" it to the then Republic of Ukraine by his "royal decree". Never mind that NO ONE EVER spoke ukrainian language there, at any time. ALL either ethnic Russians, or tatars (who Stalin sent to Siberia as punishment for avidly collaborating with Nazis during WWII). After the fall of USSR many tatars moved to Crimea, and although not happy to share it with Russians are definitely NOT looking forward to re-joining "Ukraine".
Imagine Mexico or Canada allowing China/Russia to build military bases on the border with Texas/CA/AZ or Vancouver. Would we tolerate this shit? Same thing will happen with what's called "Ukraine". A made up name by Lenin and Co. in 1914, who then in 1918 pieced together what were traditionally Russian lands of Malorossia and Novorossia, with further infusion of Galicia (Poland until 1939). Lugansk and Donetsk (or Donbas region altogether) started issuing Russian passports a little while back and voted recetly to join Russia. This is what used to be called Novorossia, for centuries, stretching South towards Crimea and Romania (Moldova now). Malorossia are lands near and around Kiev and abutting Belorus'. Galicia is land around city of L'vov and stratching a bit South towards Romania/Moldova.
Galicia lands were taken in 1939 and are now being contested by Poland, Hungary and Romania, with small portion already an autonomous even though no one wants to discuss it in Western news media. Its the land of Ruthians, olden ethnic Russians living there for 500-600 years now. As they put it to Kiev during junta takeover in 2015, "Do not come here, we have more guns than people."
