That's just how some gears work.
When you put a rod with that kind of profile into the gear it'll actually spin the gear. A round rod would not.
so like the very first gear that is mounted to the engine itself, would have this extra cutout so the rod slides in and thus the engine can turn this gear?

What i am curious about is, did they add this recently, because i noticed it immediately today and I never noticed it before.
It's one of two ways (that I'm aware of) to work gears. One is using a gear, one is using a rod. Gears need to be "tuned" to each other so they won't jam, so a rod is easier.
I don't know if there's any standard way to use them though.
