Nautical navigation can be done on a flat plain, with north pole at the centre.

Shadows can be calculated in a same way with a closer, more localised sun on a flat plain as well.

Extended light hours work because the sun oscillates between both tropic of cancer and tropic of capricorn. When its close to tropic of cancer we get extended light hours in northern "hemisphere" when its closer to tropic of capricorn we get longer nighttimes.
