I want to say it was named after George Washington.

TERENZIO The name George came from [music producer] Lou Adler, Daryl's brother-in-law. I think John chewed it over for a while, then was sold. He thanked Adler by putting him on the masthead. But still not sure why Lou Adler picked it, might have just been as simple as it had to be named something and that was fitting. But who knows
