Jesus asks us to forgive our enemies. Besides, life in prison is a death sentence just longer and more painful. Just as long as it's not the "rich guy" prison with the tennis court.

In the past, the death penalty gave the “sinner” the opportunity to acknowledge sins and get forgiveness before death. If you have a lengthy life sentence there is opportunity to sin again. That’s why those sentenced to death were accompanied to the gallows or place of execution. Just in case there was remorse for the sin. Death still happened.
