SNL went irreparably to shit when Tina Fey came aboard as head writer. It had always been a show that had had its good and bad eras, was occasionally brilliant, occasionally horrible and usually just flat mediocre. Fey injected the show with a culture and spirit of hackish, partisan meanness that snowballed and has endured to this day. Under her, SNL began to tell its audience "we hate you."
