I think they'd be happy to sacrifice a portion of their population. Remember they have too many people and the 'can only have one child' law.

My understanding is that it isn't completely abandoned. I have a friend who immigrated from there and she was born during the time when people were only allowed to have one child and she said that now if one parent is an only child, then they are allowed to have up to two children.
