if she was truly breaking free we would either never hear from her again (witness protection) or we would never hear from her again (“suicide”), but in either case we woukd not hear from her again.

Not sure about that. I think Nicole Kidman was trying to break free of her Pedo father. As victims they don’t need to rat people out, they just need to overcome and not repeat.
