Usually, when you see one just orbiting, it's because there are fighter jets nearby doing training. In this case the callsign "QI" is short for "QUID". They are attached to the RAF out of Mildenhall, UK.
Interesting that they keep the D when the abbreviation is “QI” as you have stated. Only took out the U? Q usually goes with U grammatically. I believe it further emphasizes the Q imo.
