If the silver market explodes, as I think it will, the collectors value of old coins will not appreciate as much as the actual silver content will. In other words, I believe it is a more sound investment to buy silver rounds (or bars) over old silver coins.
This is just a guess, don't take it as financial advice (except you should).
I would be inclined to agree; but the "junk" silver now is being called "constitutional currency". That is a bit of inside baseball. The Silver Morgan from 1884 is a personal piece. 100 years before 1984 seems to have historic value. We will have to wait and see.
I absolutely agree with buying "a personal piece." If its a purchase for your collection (and not strictly for investment) it is a well valued piece at that price that will only increase in value.
As for "junk silver," I was looking at the prices earlier today and they are overvalued unless you get lucky. I really think silver (the physical metal) is going to increase in value by so much over the next year or two that any other possible value in coins will pale in comparison, no matter the coin.
I await the actual value of "junk silver" I bought heavy a year ago after being gifted some "junk gold jewelry" with diamonds and platinum. If they are not spendable in a commercial sense, I will sell them for new real currency before tapping into my bullion stash...
Just throwing this out there...
