So I was just doing my daily downvotes on the White House YouTube channel, and I couldn't help but notice that the Biden's message to China has something like 14k upvotes, which is WAAAAY more than the rest of the videos on the channel. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about this current administration, I don't know what does!
That's all.
I am of ethnic Chinese descent and I don’t see any reason whatsoever why the U.S. government should bend over backwards to celebrate a holiday that played no part in the founding of this country, nor in the native European Christian cultures whose values inspired many of the principles expressed in the Constitution. When my own family accepted Christ many years ago, we abandoned the celebration of the lunar new year as it no longer held any more significance for us. The only calendar we follow now is the Western calendar, which was based on the birth of Jesus Christ.
I think CNY (lunar new year) is a pan-Asian cultural tradition that’s very important for many people. Whether that needs to be nationally recognized outside of Asia is worthy of debate. Interesting how you aren’t supposed to question it because RaCiSm.
It’s true that CNY is a big deal in many Asian countries. I still have some extended relatives living in Asia and when we go to visit, my family sends the obligatory hongbao (for Western readers: hongbao are red envelopes containing cash gifts that are given out during Chinese/lunar new year celebrations), but we do it purely out of politeness. Not doing so would be a major social faux pas. But if it were entirely up to us, we would rather skip the whole thing altogether.
