Here is my theory based on how I know Trump operates. He set up a win-win situation for him and a lose-lose situation for them.

The primary and preferred plan is Plan A-Short trial and move on. If they convict it literally means nothing. He would need to be criminally convicted by the DOJ to prevent him from holding office again. There was no upside to this for the Dems.

Plan B- Was to call as many witnesses as possible and drag this on for months essentially tying them up and exposing them. I think this was essentially a bluff to sort of force them to revert back to Trump's preferred outcome. HOWEVER, both plans would hurt the Dems and do nothing to hurt him lol
