Either he knew about it and didn’t act, which would be unpardonable. Or he somehow didn’t find out about it until he no longer lived there? That just seems way too far-fetched for me.
Am I missing something here that someone can help me with?

Long ago he offered to build a ballroom for the WH, it's unbelievable he would live there and not be into everything.
