"Move perpendicular from the crowd" ... is good advice. IF you know the direction a mob is going in, don't try to outrun it, you'll probably fail. Go 90-degrees from their direction of travel...or if they're stationary, just get out!

But rule #1 of survival is: AVOID CROWDS.

Also, as coyote1 states, if this is from a book, it would be great to have the link.
