They could’ve at least offered you a pen and paper.
While the paper and pen method works, it's best used in a situation where the conversation doesn't take longer than 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, you will be tired of writing a lot of info on paper.
I had an accident that involved my right wrist and I'm right handed. I've been asked to do the pen-and-paper method and I declined every time because my wrist hurts after 5 minutes of writing. Doctors in the past have tried to convince me to use the pen-and-paper method, so they can save a couple of bucks by not providing a qualified sign language interpreter but I stood my ground and said no.
So yeah, pen and paper method is best for convos under 10 minutes but that may differ with individuals. I know for me, that's a big no.
