The "news" has been doing the "citing other news shows" for decades now! And wikipedia has been garbage forever and on its home page it clearly states that the site is not a proper source for research. Proper research is simple when it only tracking cited sources back to the original source, but what people call "media" is how the perceive news now as a "narrative" telling them a story.
