Wow. God is not a vengeful punishing God He is love. Sad woman. Try to understand the punishing God of the old Testament is replaced by the fulfillment of the promises God made from the beginning. For God so loved the world....Jesus. Punishment is at our final judgement. By our Free Will actions and our decisions to seperate ourselves from Gods love and grace. If we choose evil we can expect to spend eternity in hell. We call God our heavenly Father he wants what is best for us but we sometimes fail to keep that in mind. Definitely a subject to study. I don't care what Hollywood has to say any more. I will listen to God's Word and Will. TRUTH IS WHAT MATTERS.
So God actually changed his mind / changed his opinion between old and new Testaments? If God is perfect and all-knowing, why would he change his mind? In the Old Testament he consigns entire villages to death (including women and children) to punish the actions of the adults. That's not exactly a model we should follow.
I've never understood why Christians don't totally disown the OT, because the OT is absolutely full of God doing terrible, terrible things.
Complicated answers and I am not an expert. Here is some of what I've learned. Because following the Covenants(promises) along the way thru the Old Testament. We see that bad things happen to those who break the covenants with God. When they turn to evil. They knew they were disobeying God. The Jews followed the Word of God for centuries. Waiting for the promised messiah. They today do not believe Jesus is that promised saviour. Christians see that Jesus is the Son of God and the fulfillment of that promise from right after Adam and Eve are thrown out of Eden. As early Christians were Jews converted by their belief that Jesus was the Messiah and many traditions and beliefs match the practices of the Jews. It makes sense those writings would be important. After all Jesus was raised a Jew. Jesus says. I have come not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Big changes began to occur within His small group of followers. The concept of the Trinity is another part to look at. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. All 3= God.
