Very telling statement about his lifetime scientific intentions>> When asked why he joined the NIAID instead of going to Vietnam he said" I wanted something that would make you very sick or kill you unless I intervened". SO Maybe to go as far as the creation of that something to stroke his need for self-importance? Sounds like it to me.
