During the Black Death in Europe everyone was strict about carrying a "posie" which was a wad of nice-smelling stuff such as flower petals held under the nose to ward off the plague. Unfortunately it took them quite a long time to realise that the plague virus was carried by body lice.

I think the posies were to mask the smell of death.
