Is it commonplace for people to ask for money on this site? Someone just asked me to send money to their paypal because they were fired from a job. Obviously I'm not sending any money. Just wondered.

Probably identity theft. Copy the message back to the user with a brief comment disowning the message, so that when they return they see how the account has been used/hacked. Then ignore.
I tried this. I was "blocked by the recipient."
