Are debit and/or credit card use shut down other than my small town in Utah?

My husband went to get lunch and could not use his debit card at several different place. They are only taking cash. I just wanted to see if this is the case else where.

Here is Ohio, I had the same issue to get lunch. Stopped at 3 different places and machines were down saying they are only taking cash.
