Why doesn't the CDC have a sample of the COVID-19 virus?

A real sample or a picture of a real sample? All I've ever seen on TV and the internet are animated pictures of what the virus is supposed to look like.

I can't fathom why people are driving around in their cars with masks on when they've never seen a picture of the real virus. Are they actually doing that just because the media says the virus exists?
