I figure there might be something to it being a fountain of youth to a degree. They don't seem to last forever but they sure live into their 90's.

They're afraid to die so they'll do anything for it. That would be pretty motivating to someone who grew up in that culture and thinks of others as cattle. To them, it's their right.
