In my work, I taught people to pursue truth, not comfort (stoic v hedonist) to get over the control their feelings have over them.
Whether by accident or design, the validation of one's subjective reality reinforces distortions.
There is a way to say, oh I see your pain then demonstrate how their focus on their feelings makes it worse. Only works with ppl who want to get better, be better.
