Theodore Geisel (Dr Suess) was involved in creating War propaganda for the US during WW II. Many of the morals found in his books are drawn from that experience. He knew what totalitarianism was and how to fight it.

this^ and if I remember correctly, that is what his Butter Battle Book was based on.

I have a lot of his books, and loved to read them to my students.

of course, the communist principals hated DS because he wasn't part of their 'common core' curriculum..
