Not sure if they still use them, but sub hunters used to have sonobuoys that launched out and provided microphones in the water for triangulation. My dad used to fly back seat on S2’s in the 70’s. I’m sure the tech has evolved since, but then again, we’ve been using M2 .50 cals for the last 88 years.
