The reason it was suspected that hydroxychloroquine would work (there was some data on it working even before Trump said it) on this virus in the first place is because it was shown to work on SARS (likely in lab mice trials, SARS was not widespread enough of around long enough for them to know much about it from human patients or try many medications on them).
What is weird and eye opening is that the media was willing to falsely slander a medication and have people die as a result because they hate Trump (because he said it would work and because they wanted this to be an actual crisis which an effective medication could neutralize) and their masters wanted to sell a more expensive and less effective alternative (but one that they had a patent for).

Hydroxychloroquine and zinc alone would eliminate the whole cold and flu section in every drug store. Billions of dollars in advertising alone.
