I was 20 when he was first elected so I can speak of the brainwashing of my generation which was quite effective. They taught us that government solved child labor, ended the great depression, and gave blacks civil rights. They taught us nothing about capitalism, free trade, or its pivotal role in forming America's wealth. So when I was 18 it was common for others my age to wonder, 'why don't we just have socialism?' We were never taught the horrors of it, NEVER.
So when Obama came along and promised free health care... yeah, why not? Free this, free that? Yeah, why not?
Next, the media spent years bashing George Bush. He was a joke. An idiot, and an evil idiot. He was an evil Republican. He passed the Patriot Act, he got us into unnecessary wars. Obama was going to "make government more transparent," and end those wars.
Next, the media spent decades making black people the victim. Our country is racist. It is all about holding the black man down. Why hasn't there ever been a black president? So when Obama came along, of course we had to vote for him. Over the evil, white, REPUBLICAN McCain? And his hick, stupid, redneck VP Palin?
When he was elected I was in my college dorm and I can still remember the rumbling of all the people outside celebrating. I was happy he was elected but I stayed inside. It was very soon after that I first heard of Ron Paul and austrian economics.
