I'm gonna give you the benefit of a doubt on the basis that you're just a legit lurker on these boards who doesn't really post all that much.

If you look at all the other comments there and the post itself, you can build a pretty good picture as to what actually happened. If you look through my own post and comment history you might be able to find a bigger picture on what George News is actually about.

But a long summary: what happened is that a certain mod, who was a really popular for his proficient mod and site dev work, decided that George News were paytriots, especially because they accepted donations on their live chat and sold merch on their site. So on that assumption, he sought to look for evidence against GN. One of the first things he found was that the George News website used paper.li, which is a content management service (think WordPress), which provides templates for building a website. On the front of the paper.li site they show that they were used by all-lefty websites including The Guardian, so that clued him in to GN being maybe a Deep State operation.

Then he and others began to pick at other failings in turn, like the fact that the site uses trackers, the fact the GN does not publish original content of their own (they're a news media aggregator), typos inconsistent with a professional news organisation, archive.org saving GN's Twitter feeds in south and south-east Asian languages (which I refuted such that he crossed that out) and the GN banner pointing to their merch store. There's also the manner of their comms not being productive as Q is, but only repeating things like WRWY and WWG1WGA, and not confirming their IDs.

The final nail in the coffin for him was that George News used footage that comes from DVIDS.com, the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, which is a distribution service like Reuters, AP, Ruptly, etc but for exclusively DoD materials. Note that these are not the same as licensors: they act as intermediaries for the licensors (in this case, DoD) for media outlets to purchase matierials. He believed that GN were stealing professional materials from sites like DVIDS and passing it off as their own.

Well, fair dinkum, maybe George really is a paytriot who's extremely good at maintaining the LARP. But then the mod decided to confront GN about DVIDS in Telegram, and got banned, and others who were in on the action also tried to question GN and got banned for the same reason. Feeling affronted that mod decided, for our own good, to unilaterally ban all links to George, without properly consulting with the other mods. This caused enormous backlash and conflict between those who felt the ban was justified and those who strongly opposed it.

After several days of backlash the mod decided to quit. This left resentment among those of the GAW community who liked (deified?) that mod and decided that George News was to blame, and many of those are absolutely convinced that GN are Black hats and those in support of GN (like myself) are George shills. Ever since then any mention and support of GN gets downvoted to oblivion. Since that's basically half of GAW, the mods do not want to get involved with the GN business either, deciding basically to wait and see what comes out.

There's still a decent segment of this community who do like George News or are just ambivalent about them, but now none of their links will reach the front page. This will remain so until something more substantial comes out of George News to vindicate them.
