A good book to read is Animal, Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingslover (original edition 2007). She outlines the Monsanto's role in this. She also writes about how whole communities sustained themselves by the growing of food and raising of animals. Big corporations have taken that away from them. Legislation and regulation made sure only the big grower could thrive. Think of Monsanto in charge of the fertilizer, weed control and end product. It's scary. Did you know if you buy seeds from any of the large seed companies, they have a terminator gene in the seed so it does not come back next year. You have to go out of your way to find veg. with a long lineage so you can harvest your own seeds in the fall and use them in your garden next year.
