Ultimately, I think there was no plan/show in the first place or something went horribly wrong with the plan.

The response from Trump and the legal fight was horribly disorganized, so it didn't seem like anything was even planned in advance. It took weeks to scramble to get any sort of response.

Maybe they had too much faith in the government and system and thought the Stop The Steal fight would work and the courts and DOJ would do the right thing and prosecute the bad guys.
