When it is behind his elbow it's huge: about 4-5 times the size of his elbow. How can that possibly be an illusion? Things look larger when they are near the camera... it's near the camera then? If it's not huge, then it's not really behind his elbow.
So it's huge, and they're sticking it behind his elbow, but he doesn't touch it, or any of the other mics, as he's gesturing with a football sized mic snaked between his arms.
