It was an attempted pun...

But, as for "why", one of the following reasons.

Purposely blocking the canal to stop something else from getting through. Maybe impacting the Group Arabian Sea Exercise 21 US 5th Fleet that is nearby.

The ship perhaps was known smuggling ship, and purpose was to expose it by forcing them to remove containers to free themselves. We'll know soon enough on this one.

As a signal to start something...this event would definitely make the news, and may have been a trigger.

Drunk/negligent/reckless captain.

Faulty equipment, or as claimed, the wind (very unlikely)
