The don't need it now. With enough dead voters and even voters who never existed in the first place, they can win any election.

It isn't hopeless and things can be fixed (though in the most corrupted states, not through voting anymore but there are other means). However, we also need to be realistic about how bad the situation is right now so we can identify the problems and solve them.
