It seems that the insurance company would be pretty pissed off at the idea of a giant ship under their watch taking unnecessary risks to do a lawn job at the high school with that many other ships relatively close by.
Does this imply that the captain and crew are not likely to have done that on their own. Way risky.
Aside from tech, some outside influence perhaps? Or force? Leverage? "Do this or else."
Why are they no other reports of bored ship captains doing stuff to amuse themselves? No butterflies, no daisies, no boobies..?
On the other hand, it makes sense that an immature captain doing stupid graffiti would not be the best captain out there and would be exactly the type of person to get a ship stuck like that.

Operating system could have been hacked, virus placed then when they black out, virus can take control.
