IMHO, SF really has not had much of an art/music scene for a long time compared to what it was in the past. I am not referring to druggies who just call themselves that, but people who actually make a living. When rent was as high as it was for the several years, everyone left. (What was the last band that came from SF Bay Area? Green Day? Think about it.) This is just pandering BS.
Friend of mine was a music teacher - lived in the city (rent controlled apartment). Fantastic drummer who was a studio musician but teaching was also a big part of his self support. Very good one too - extremely patient. Found out last month he died of a heart attack last fall. I have to wonder how much the stress of having a large portion of his livelihood ripped out from under him contributed to that. When I mention his passing to people, everyone asks if it was CV. Grrr...if you mean the charade of CV, then yes.
