I was actually thinking about OPs question just yesterday, and I realized something. The military pulled off its plan to install Trump after 8 years of Obama purges/appointments, and 12 years of Bush purges/appointments and 8 years of Clinton purges/appointments. Somehow we don't fully understand, they are able to function decapitated, perhaps through devolution set up under Reagan to counter the Evil Empire. Part of "the Plan" (i.e. War Plan Rainbow for WW3) involves a scenario where McCarthy was right, and the Venona transcripts proved we're playing out that scenario now.
