It's liberals/leftists who are trying to set gun policy in the US that don't know what an AR-15 is. Or they do know, but lie about it anyways.
A lot of people in America absolutely do know what an AR-15 is. Certainly the people that own one do and there are 10s of millions of AR-15s out there in America.
In terms of mass shootings, hand guns are the most popular weapon of choice. Yet the lefty politicians are always all about banning the scary looking guns with scary names such as the AR-15. The 'common sense' gun control they push has no 'common sense' in it, just like anything coming out of the government. The irony is, they might be avoiding going after the hand guns because their inner city voters like to shoot each other with them.
In addition, while less convenient for crimes because they are less portable, the AR-15 and other rifles are far better for fighting off a totalitarian government trying to take away your rights. This is so because, when compared to hand guns, they have better range, better accuracy, and can penetrate body armor. Maybe that's why they are targeting these specific guns. While handguns are good protection for every day use mainly due to the convenience of carrying them, they are not great at protecting you from the government due to their inability to penetrate body armor. In addition, during these mass-shooting situations the left is always so concerned about, body armor penetration is irrelevant because the soft targets these psychos almost always go after do not wear body armor. Only cops and soldiers regularly wear body armor which are both groups the lefties hate so it's kind of odd that all of a sudden they are so concerned about them.
