I'm on the other side of the scale/think there's a good chance he's alive, but still have those doubts from all the reasons you mentioned. just can't imagine two young women from a liberal area being that mature, but perhaps they were told something that made them understand. can't wait to find out how they did it. the suspense is crazy.
