The book "Dr. Mary's Monkey" goes into this and much more, but the CIA was studying ways to use monkey viruses to trigger cancer. One motivation was an effort to create a virus that could be used to assassinate Fidel Castro. I am reading the book now, only about 5 chapters in, but it is quite interesting.
