Answer: No, the current level is not made public right away for security reasons. The alert status for each military branch may also differ at any given time. The status level on our "current" page is determined by community alerts and known threats but is not recorded on the official change history until a status change is revealed to the public by the U.S. government.
Oh that is weird. When I worked as a contractor at military bases, they always posted the defcon level outside the base as you drive in. I imagine an easy way to figure out the defcon level is to check the military base postings by driving by the base. Can probably check street maps on bing/google to see if they have signs available.
