While I cannot answer your question, it did make me wonder a related question. Is it possible to spoof plane activity by using drones with fake transponders, OR using sophisticated software, to give the impression of massive plane movements? I would expect that in a time of war, or in the days leading up to war, that our military forces would not simply give up their positions but would spoof fake positions and flight paths.
There is a precedence for this....back in WWII, there was an entire fake US "army" in England, out in the open, with "tanks" and "trucks" that were just inflated balloons so the German air reconnaissance flights would pick up those images and make the Germans believe that it was real. And it worked, apparently.
So any planefags here know if spoofing transponders can do this?
