The truth is you are not going to know based only on associations. Patton Oswalt, for example, is friends with Kevin James and Adam Sandler. Michelle McNamara's brother was a colleague of mine and both James and Sandler were at the wedding and were/are pretty good friends. I think there's something really wrong with Oswalt which is unfortunate because I thought he was hilarious on King of Queens. But the whole Michelle McNamara story makes no sense whatsoever, and he has otherwise said and done some creepy things. Do I think Kevin James and Adam Sandler know? IDK. I often think about the Jimmy Kimmel connection to Adam Carolla.
