What did Jesus mean? "Thou art Peter (stone) and upon this Rock(mass of rock) i will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it?

Peter was a chip off the ole block or rock.

Jesus meant this rock-The Rock of revealed truth: thou art Christ ( the annointed-consecrated)Son of the Living God.

What are "the gates of hell?". Jesus was speaking at the foot of Mr.Hermon, hell is hades the underworld. Jesus was making a declaration of war against evil. Caesarea Philippi (the foot of mt.hermon) was a religious center for paganiam and is also where the fallen angels descended.to earth.
