Can someone riff on DC statehood vis a vis 11.3, US corporation vs Republic, foreign occupation etc?

I thought it was insane when I learned the "capital" of the US literally wasn't a part of it.

I know it'll mean additional Dem senators, but is there a deeper/more sinister agenda?
